ACTOR 5: I can do a great / Edelweiss

ADDED 11.20.13:

This scene is the first time we see Captain Von Trapp sing in the film, because he gave it up after his first wife died. This scene shows us that he is relearning to love music, his family, and his life.

This is the reprise of Edelweiss. The Von Trapp family is singing in a concert before they flee Austria to escape the Nazis. Captain Von Trapp becomes emotional singing this song about his country because he knows he is about to leave it forever. Luckily, Maria joins in and saves him, and eventually the entire audience sings along as well.

Edelweiss is a show tune from the 1959 Rogers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music. Its popularity has led many people to believe that it is an Austrian folk song or the national anthem.

And here are the lyrics:

Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Every morning you greet me
Small and white clean and bright
You look happy to meet me
Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow
Bloom and grow forever
Edelweiss, Edelweiss
Bless my homeland forever.
